Adjuntos y Salidas: a Natural Connection |
|---|
Open to the public from April 9 to May 3 in San Pedro |
The Centro Cultural Costarricense Norteamericano presents the exhibit “Adjuntos y Salidas” by the Canadian Ralph Jarvis, from April 9 to May 3 at the Sophia Wanamaker Gallery in San Pedro.
Adjuntos y Salidas is an exhibit of mixed techniques and multiple images that explore the natural connection between the Canadian and Costa Rican Atlantic coast. The exhibit focuses on techniques that make reference to the natural history and environmental education drawing, included the creation of virtual reality environments, the sensory appeal and the interactivity.
“With this exhibit, Ralph Jarvis aims at raising public, private and community awareness on the environment and shared species both in Canada as well as in tropical areas of Costa Rica,” stated Juan Diego Roldán, coordinator of fine arts at the Centro Cultural.
These environments make ends of latitudes that share neo-tropical migratory species, the birds that migrate between them and depend on the ecosystems of these two regions. They are also directly connected with the Atlantic Ocean and its current though the marine species, such as the leatherback turtle that nest in Costa Rica and look for food all the way to the Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada.
Adjuntos y Salidas gathers conceptual elements reproduced by means of stages and aspects of the migration of the species, including: the departure, journey, arrival, establishment and return. Even when it is based on the natural history, the intention of the artist with the exhibit is to provide reflection and awareness on the universal values that connect people through the relationships, communities and cultures.
Ralph Jarvis has had a career in which he has mixed natural history, education and artistic expression. As administrator of the Salmonier Natural Park, he places emphasis on environmental education and the protection of wild life in the West of Newfoundland. This has contributed to the creation of paintings and pictures exhibited in museums, edited in publications, educational materials and in gallery exhibits. As principal of the Common Ground Heritage Planning, Jarvis has taken part, designed and carried out interpretation programs base on the community by means of thematic exhibits related to the journey of species.
In 2008, Jarvis finished his first work for a public space, two paintings of great format (One Swaying Being and To Trust the Ocean), requested by the Health Institute of the West of Newfoundland for the waiting room of the Health Sciences Center in St. John’s, Canada.
More recently, Jarvis has provided Boulder Publications with illustrations for a book on birds of Newfoundland (Birds of Newfoundland), and has had individual exhibits. The exhibit Adjuntos y Salidas has been developed in Canada and Costa Rica to be presented in the Sophia Wanamaker Gallery, of the Centro Cultural Costarricense Norteamericano.
